I can’t believe I am here! I studied this topic intently during history class, so being here feels so surreal. 5 historic sites honour the events that occurred during the devastating December 7, 1941 surprise air attack at Pearl Harbour by the Japanese. The attack plunged the United States into World War II, claiming thousands of innocent lives. The site of the most devastating loss of life , the USS Arizona, was unfortunately closed for structural repairs, but Azmi and I managed to get tickets for the @BattleshipMissouri. Today the USS Arizona Memorial is a place of somber beauty and quiet reflection. You begin your tour at the Visitor Centre, where you can watch a film about the attack and view plaques honouring lives lost on that fateful day. (The film admission is free, but you do need to reserve a time slot in advance). We then paid our admission fee for the Battleship Missouri Tour and boarded a bus there. General Macarthur accepted the unconditional Japanese surrender that ended World War II on September 2, 1945 on the Surrender Deck of the Missouri. Today, the massive “Mighty Mo” is a living museum with exhibits spanning three wars and five decades of service. The tour highlights “Life at Sea” and will show you where the crew ate, slept and spent most of their free time. You also get to see the command and control of the ship that includes the bridge, flying bridge and the Captain’s at-sea cabin.
